1. I have already reinitialised the WiFi, setting it up using WPS from scratch.

2. Your AI is out of date, HP Smart has been replaced by the HP app, which is what is shown when I follow the link you gave.

Please stop regurgitating AI slop and ask an engineer who knows what to do.

Hi @wiggers42

Thank you for responding.

I understand that you are unable to print from your Android phone, even after reconfiguring the printer's wireless connection using WPS. Let's go through a few additional checks to isolate the issue. I would request you to please follow the steps:

Assign a Manual (Static) IP Address

  • Ensure the printer is connected to your network.
  • On a computer connected to the same network, open a web browser.
  • Enter the printer's current IP address in the address bar (for example, http://192.168.1.142).
  • The printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) will open.
  • Select the Network tab.
  • Select Wireless (802.11) if using Wi-Fi.
  • Click IPv4 Configuration or Network Address (IPv4).
  • Change the IP configuration from Automatic (DHCP) to Manual IP or Static.
  • Enter the following information:
  • IP Address: An unused address on your network (e.g., 192.168.1.200)
  • Subnet Mask: Typically 255.255.255.0
  • Default Gateway: Your router's IP address (commonly 192.168.1.1)
  • Preferred DNS Server: Your router's IP address or a public DNS such as 8.8.8.8
  • Click Apply or Save.
  • Wait for the printer to reconnect to the network.
  • Access the printer using the new IP address to confirm the change.

Check print spooler settings and status (Android)

  • Make sure the print spooler is clear on your Android smartphone or tablet.
  • In the Settings menu, tap Apps or Applications.
  • Tap the More icon , and then tap Show System Apps.
  • Tap Print Spooler. If Print Spooler is not an option, tap Storage, and then tap Print Spooler.
  • Tap Clear Data or Force Stop.
  • Restart your mobile device.

Add the printer in the HP app

  • Uninstall the HP APP and reinstall the HP app. https://www.hp.com/us-en/hp-app/overview.html
  • add the printer from the app.
  • Select Add Printer.
  • Allow all requested permissions, including:
  • Nearby Devices
  • Local Network
  • Location (required by Android for Wi-Fi device)
  • Make sure the printer and Phone is connected to same network 2.4GHz

I hope this helps.

Have a good day.

Thank you for the latest suggustions. Please remember that this used to work perfectly until a month or so ago. The WiFi setup has not changed and one of our phones hasn't changed either. The only thing I can think of that could have changed without my knowledge is the printer's firmware.

In the printer's settings, I created a static IP address as in the first recommendation. I also looked at the other settings and found that the date and time were not configured. I have set the correct time zone and linked the printer to a time server. Why is this not part of the initial setup?

I reinstalled the HP app on my phone. It instantly told me what my printer was, suggesting it is connected to the network. I also went through the add printer dialog and it again found my printer OK:

Having added it, I went to the diagnostic tools further down the home screen. But here it could not connect to the printer:

I cleared the print spooler as recommended and restarted my phone. When I try to print I get exactly the same as before. It knows about my printer and its IP address is correct. But the paper size is wrong and it just says it's not available:

This used to just work!

Hi @wiggers42,

Thanks for your response and Thank you for the detailed update.

I can see you’ve already tried quite a few advanced steps, including setting a static IP and correcting the printer’s date/time. Since your Android device still recognizes the printer but fails when attempting to print.

A few additional checks you can try :

  1. Default print service On Android, ensure only one print service is active. Go to Settings -Connected Devices -Printing. Disable “Default Print Service” if it’s running alongside HP Print Service Plugin, as they can conflict.
  2. Network isolation Some routers enable “AP isolation” or “client isolation,” which prevents devices on Wi-Fi from talking to each other. Please check your router’s wireless settings to confirm this is disabled.
  3. Clear HP  App Cache Beyond reinstalling, clearing the app cache can help. Go to Settings -Apps -HP Smart -Storage -Clear Cache.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, I recommend testing printing from another Android device on the same network. If the second device fails in the same way, the printer firmware or router settings are the likely cause.

I hope this helps.

Hello,

I had this same issue.  I did a firmware update and that solved the issue.  I am getting a security warning now, but if I approve it, it prints fine.

Hope that helps,

Tom

Apologies. I have been able to get access to the printer and other devices on my LAN by using Cloudflare Personal DNS instead of the one provided by Proton VPN.
