Hi @dcrockwe,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the issue you're experiencing with the HP LaserJet 1020 driver on your HP ENVY x360 Laptop (15-ed0056nr) running Windows 11 could be due to driver compatibility issues or an incomplete installation. Follow these steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
Step 1: Verify the Driver Compatibility
Check the Driver Version:
- Visit the HP LaserJet 1020 Printer series Software and Driver and search for the HP LaserJet 1020 drivers.
- Confirm that the driver supports Windows 11.
- If Windows 11 drivers are unavailable, use the Windows 10 driver in compatibility mode.
Download the Universal Print Driver (UPD):
- If specific drivers for the LaserJet 1020 are not available, download the HP Universal Print Driver (PCL6 or PCL5) for Windows from HP's website.
Step 2: Remove and Reinstall the Printer
Uninstall the Printer:
- Press Win + R, type control, and hit Enter.
- Go to Devices and Printers or Printers & Scanners.
- Locate the HP LaserJet 1020, right-click (or click) and select Remove Device.
Delete Old Drivers:
- Open the Print Management tool by searching for it in the Start menu.
- Under Print Servers > Drivers, locate and delete the HP LaserJet 1020 driver.
Restart Your Laptop:
- Reboot your laptop to clear any cached data.
Reinstall the Driver:
- Install the driver you downloaded earlier (specific or universal driver).
Step 3: Configure the Printer
Check the Printer Port:
- Go to Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on the HP LaserJet 1020 and select Printer Properties.
- Under the Ports tab, ensure the correct port (e.g., USB or TCP/IP) is selected.
Set the Printer as Default:
- Right-click on the printer and select Set as Default Printer.
Print a Test Page:
- In Printer Properties, click Print Test Page to verify functionality.
Step 4: Resolve Potential Errors
Check for Windows Updates:
- Ensure your Windows 11 is updated. Sometimes, missing updates can cause driver conflicts.
Disable Print Spooler Service (and Restart):
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
- Locate Print Spooler, right-click, and select Restart.
- If restarting doesn’t work, stop the service, delete files in the C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS folder, and start the service again.
Check Error Logs:
- Go to the Event Viewer (search in Start menu) and review the Application and System logs for specific printer-related errors.
Step 5: Advanced Troubleshooting
- Test with Another Computer: Connect the printer to another PC to verify the issue isn’t hardware-related.
- Use HP Print and Scan Doctor: Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and fix printing issues.
