How do I set tray 2 as default for printing from my iPhone? My phone says "The printer is out of paper (tray 1)" every time I try to print.

Welcome to the HP English Community --

You need to adjust the Tray and Paper Settings.

You cannot quite get to those in the job setup -- the Tray and Paper gets set before you configure the details of the current job.

=======================================

For the sake of answering at all:

Assuming you have a supported iPhone and are running either the HP Smart app OR that you have access to your network connected printer using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Know too, that Laser Printer EWS is sometimes different enough from other EWS animals that general advice will miss the mark more often than it matches.  Unless you are using a Laser printer that happens to use one of the EWS formats as shown in the example below, the settings you seek are "there" but just "somewhere else" in the EWS hierarchy.

Finally, DeskJet Printers manage Tray and Paper differently from other printers.  Instead of full paper size / type control, DeskJet top-loading printers use a "small", "medium", and "Large" setup.  It does not apply here since top loading printings only have one input.  Mentioned only as FYI for anyone who happened to wander into this thread...

From within the HP Smart Mobile Application > Printer Settings > Advanced Settings (EWS)

OR

Original EWS

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper (Management)

Select / Adjust settings for Paper Size / Type

Model and EWS version Dependent:  Advanced section

Click Apply to save changes

OR

Example - (Alternate EWS format - select new OfficeJet Pro printers and at least a few LaserJet printers)

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Section Paper > Trays > click on Tray to configure

Next  (in addition and as available)

Section Print > Default Print Options > Select default tray
