I followed the posted directions and was able to access the printer website.  I navigated to the Security>Certificate menu and selected "create a new self-signed certificate".  I generated a new expiry date in 2035 and clicked finished.  EWS then told me I had successfully configured a new certificate.  However, when I select "view certificate" it is still showing the original expired dates and it still generates the fault preventing printing.

Hi @DSCOTTS,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

This is a known quirk with HP LaserJet printers; the certificate creation process sometimes appears successful, but doesn’t apply because the printer is still using the old certificate for HTTPS and IPP services. Here’s how to fix it:

1. Confirm You Applied It to All Services

After creating the new self-signed certificate:

  • Go to Networking → Certificates → Certificate Assignments.
  • Make sure the new certificate is assigned to:
    • HTTPS
    • IPP
    • Other secure services. If it’s still showing the old one, select the new certificate and click Apply.

2. Restart the Printer

  • Power cycle the printer after assigning the certificate.
  • This forces the Embedded Web Server (EWS) and print services to reload the new certificate.

3. Clear Browser Cache

  • Sometimes the browser shows the old certificate from the cache.
  • Refresh the page or open in a private/incognito window to confirm the new expiry date.

4. Check Printer Date & Time

  • If the printer’s clock is wrong, the new certificate may appear invalid.
  • Navigate to General Settings → Date & Time and correct it.

5. If Still Stuck

  • Delete the old certificate:
    • Networking → Certificates → Delete (select the expired one).
  • Recreate the new certificate and reassign it.
  • If the printer still refuses to use the new certificate, update the firmware: HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw | HP® Support

💡 Why this happens: The printer generates the new certificate, but doesn’t automatically bind it to secure services. Until you assign it and restart, the old expired certificate remains active.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello Vikram,

I'm afraid that your advice didn't work.  My printer EWS dow not have selection options for Certificate Assignments or Certificate Delete.   My product number is B3Q11A and current Firmware Datecode is 20201119.   When I navigate through the device display Setup>Service>Update LaserJet Pro, it says there is no update available.

Oddly, when I try to download the firmware and I enter the SN into your system it says it is invalid (VNB8HDBDZ9).  It is shown in several spots on the H/W and in the EWS and they all match.

Thanks for your assistance,

Scott
