I have canceled my instant ink membership and loaded my printer with new, compatible ink cartridges, but it says my firmware blocked it because they contain a non-HP chip. How can I proceed with using my printer? I don't print enough for the membership to be worth it.

Welcome to the HP Community --

I do not see that you included your printer model.

If you did so, the post failed to include the information.

The printer is perhaps complaining because you are trying to use refilled / remanufactured ink cartridges that lack (do not have) an embedded HP Chip / circuitry.

Said another way --

Nearly every HP printer is subject to Dynamic Security protection that checks for -- and requires -- every ink cartridge to include an embedded HP Chip in the cartridge.

There is no legal method to bypass the security.

Ask your ink supplier if they adhere to this requirement.

Sorry, my printer is an HP Officejet Pro 6978. I bought my cartridges brand new from Walmart that stated they were compatible to my printer.

Good Morning --

Thanks for the added information.

OK --

There is a new Firmware Update that should be installed.

Open Page

HP Officejet 6950/6960/Pro 6960/Pro 6970 All-in-One Printer series Firmware Update

Please read the -- Description --

-- Short version --

If your printer was one in this model series that was manufactured prior to December 1, 2016 then Dynamic Security will not be enabled by this firmware.  In other words, if the printer is old enough, dynamic security does not apply.

-- Document that explains --

Updates have been released to correct issues in certain affected printers - only as listed

HP Inkjet Printers - Dynamic Security Feature Affecting Cartridges Using Non-HP Security Chip

-- Yeah, but --

Unfortunately, though the firmware will behave as necessary according to the age of your printer,  the firmware might not make a difference to whether your Walmart cartridges work or not.

The use of such cartridges is not supported even if the mechanism that would prevent their use is not relevant (not the reason).

I hope it works out the way you want.

---------------------------------------------------

-- What else --

Know that should you replace the printer with another HP model, Dynamic Security will likely be a factor.

and

Other manufacturers use something similar on at least some of their printers.  Of course, the security has a different name and that printer maker would want (require) you to use their ink.
