I keep getting the following printing out on my HP Officejet Pro 7740.  It prints about every 15 minutes.  I don't know where it comes from.  When it prints there are no jobs showing in my print cue.  It started after I down loaded the latest print drivers.  It will repeat until I run out of paper.

It looks like this is a known issue where the printer keeps printing a status page like this due to constant IPP Keep‑Alive requests from a Windows driver, even when no jobs are queued. Here's how to resolve it:

Step 1: Clear Print Spooler & Cancel Any Pending Jobs

A lingering job could be triggering repeated requests:

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Print Spooler, right-click → Stop.
  3. Open File Explorer, go to: C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS

Delete all files in that folder.

  1. Go back to Services, right-click Print Spooler → Start.
  2. See if the odd printout stops.

 

Step 2: Disable IPP Keep‑Alive in the Printer’s Web Interface

Some HP printers let you turn off Keep‑Alive settings to prevent repeated HTTP status prints:

  1. Print a Network Configuration sheet from the printer (via touchscreen under Wireless or Network settings).
  2. Note the printer’s IP (e.g., 192.168.1.100) and access it via a browser: http://<printer_IP>.
  3. Navigate to Network → Advanced Settings or IPP Settings.
  4. Look for Keep‑Alive or IPP Enable/Disable, and disable it.
  5. Save and restart the printer.

 

Step 3: Use a Standard TCP/IP Port Instead of IPP

Switching from an IPP port to a Standard TCP/IP port on Windows often stops these status prints:

  1. Go to Control Panel → Devices and Printers.
  2. Right-click your 7740 → Printer Properties → Ports tab.
  3. If it’s set to something like IPP or HP IPP, click Add Port… → Standard TCP/IP Port, then create a port with the printer’s IP address.
  4. Set it as the default port and hit Apply.

 

Step 4: Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware can cause unwanted behavior like this:

  1. Open HP Smart or the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) via its IP.
  2. Go to Printer Maintenance → Update Printer.
  3. If an update is available, install it.
  4. After updating, revisit the Keep‑Alive and port settings above.
