HP Office Jet Pro X476dw MFP
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I have a new Windows 10 machine and I am trying to install the ""HP Office Jet Pro X476dw MFP Full Software Solution" for my  HP Office Jet Pro X476dw which is available here:

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-x476-multifunction-printer-series/...

The installer runs for a couple of minutes and then I see the "Unsuccessful Network Installation The printer was unable to be installed over the network" message in the installer window. Note that other Windows 10 machines on my home network are able to print to the printer, so, the printer is properly connected to the network.

I have also tried all of the instructions on this page:

https://support.hp.com/lv-en/document/c05032099

The instructions include the following steps:

  1. Restart the computer, printer, and router
  2. Uninstall the HP driver and software
  3. Repair system files (run sfc /scannow from Windows 10 command prompt)
  4. Use the Microsoft Fixit Solution
  5. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor

I have run all of these steps and there are no issues other than the "Unsuccessful Network Installation" message from the installer.

Please help!!

Thanks,

Don

I figured out a solution to the problem: run it in Windows 7 compatibility mode. This is what I did:

1. Run  the installer
2. After selecting the type of connection and printer, the installer runs for a couple of minutes and I see "Unsuccessful Network Installation.  The printer was unable to be installed over the network".
3. The installation in step 2 above, creates an item in the Windows Start Menu under HP for the printer "HP Officejet Pro X476dw MFP". Though you would think the printer is now installed, when you click on that item, it pops up a screen to connect to a printer. So, it was not actually installed.
4. The solution is to run the application in Windows 7 Compatibility mode. To do this, right-click the printer item in the start menu, select "More", then select "Open File Location". This folder opens:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\HP\HP Officejet Pro X476dw MFP
5. Right click the item in the folder, "HP Officejet Pro X476dw MFP", and select "Properties"
6. Click the "Compatibility" Tab
7. Check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for"
8. Select "Windows 7"
9. Go back to the Windows Start Menu, select the printer under "HP", and install the printer. It installs correctly without the "Unsuccessful Network Installation"
10. If you want, you can change the "Compatibility Mode" back from the properties of the Start menu item for the printer. It seems that only the printer installation part of the process requires that it run in compatibility mode for Windows 7.
