When I copy a photo the scanner is in Duplex mode and i have to select single sided. Next time I do the same it has defaulted to duplex. I don't need duplex for scanning and printing a photo. how do I stop the scanner defaulting to duplex?

Hi @vosperd
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
I understand how frustrating it feels when you have to change the same setting every single time. Thank you for explaining the situation so clearly.
Let’s walk through the steps that usually stop an HP LaserJet from defaulting to duplex when copying or scanning on Windows.
Below are the areas to check. These steps focus on the Windows HP App and the printer’s own control panel, since those are the two places where duplex defaults can be stored.
1. Check the Copy Settings on the Printer Panel
Sometimes the printer remembers the last used copy setting.
- On the printer’s touchscreen, open Copy.
- Go into Settings or Options.
- Look for 2‑Sided Copy or Duplex.
- Change it to 1‑Sided.
- Before exiting, look for Save as Default or Set as Default.
- If available, select it so the printer keeps this as the permanent setting.
If the printer does not show a “save default” option, it should still remember the last used setting once changed.
2. Check the Scan Settings in the HP App (Windows)
The HP App sometimes stores duplex as the last-used scan preference.
- Open the HP App on your Windows PC.
- Select your printer.
- Open Scan.
- Choose Scanner Settings or More Settings.
- Find Two‑Sided Scanning.
- Set it to Off or 1‑Sided.
- Save or apply the setting before closing.
This ensures the app does not automatically re-enable duplex the next time.
3. Check the Print Preferences in Windows
Even though you are copying/scanning, Windows print defaults can sometimes influence the HP App.
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to Devices and Printers.
- Right‑click your HP LaserJet 209dw.
- Select Printing Preferences.
- Open the Finishing or Layout tab.
- Turn Two‑Sided Printing to Off or 1‑Sided.
- Click Apply and OK.
This ensures Windows does not push duplex as a default.
4. Restart the Printer and PC
After changing defaults, restart both devices so the settings refresh properly.
If you’d like, you can tell me whether the duplex option appears during Copy, Scan, or both, and I can guide you more precisely.

Hi Hawks_Eye
I don't have the Windows App but I have HP Smart which problably does the same.
In Advanced Settings I found the option to set the default to 1-1 sided and it seems to work ok .
I rebooted both the printer and PC and whn I go to Copy the default option on the printer comes up as 1-1 sided which is what I want.
Apart from the printer working, domestic harmony has also been restored
Many thanks
Don

You are Very Welcome @vosperd
That’s a perfect resolution—you found the right spot in HP Smart’s Advanced Settings to set the default to single‑sided, and now the printer remembers it. Nicely done.
What you experienced is typical: HP devices often “remember” the last used setting unless you explicitly set a default. By locking in 1‑1 sided as the default, you’ve prevented duplex from sneaking back in. Restarting both the printer and PC was a smart move too, since it forces the new defaults to load cleanly.
I really like how you described the outcome—“domestic harmony restored.” That’s the best kind of troubleshooting success.
If you ever want to fine‑tune further, you can also check:
- Copy defaults directly on the printer’s control panel (sometimes hidden under “Setup” or “Preferences”).
- HP Smart shortcuts: you can create a custom shortcut for single‑sided photo copies, so it’s one tap instead of digging into settings.
Thanks again for your confirmation, and we wish you an amazing day ahead! 😊
