HP Recommended

Mine is a fairly old printer, but my iMac is only about 8 months old. I received a message that an upcoming update will not be compatible with this printer extension. So I went browsing to try to update it. I didn't find the word "extension" but I tried to download updated firmware and drivers. They did not download. So I didn't even try the only other option, which I think was a software update but was not sure from the title. I would obviously not want to lose the functionality of this printer, so I would be most appreciative if I could get some advice.
