The printer is trying to download an update automatically. It immediately succeeds to get to 100% but then immediately says that the "Update cannot be download....".
I have factory reset the printer and set it up again including Instant Ink registration.
I have followed the guidelines on another post about this problem (Change IP, change DNS server remove Web Services and re-start them) but this has not helped.
HP Support Assistant says that there is not an update available and looking at the firmware download it is about the same age as what is installed.
I cannot turn off automatic updates as the printer is enrolled in Instant Ink.
The printer will not print when trying to download until you go and cancel the download.
Looking for a way to either force an install of the updated firmware if there is one or to re-install it or to force the automatically update to be turned off.
Thank you in advance of any help.

Looks like HP has been listening somewhere along the line, I checked other posts and found that they have released a new firmware dated 16 May 2023.
I have downloaded this to my computer and applied it. Turned the printer off at the wall and then on and it has just gone on to work normally where before it went into the download cycle.
Go to the following
HP OfficeJet Pro 8024 All-in-One Printer Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Customer Support and then I clicked the firmware and downloaded from website rather than trying to use the Smart app.
Need to say thank you to @MartinA55 who listed on another persons question this solution.
Good Luck to all

Thank you for the suggestion. Going through the printer screen itself just causes the original problem.
Trying to go through the Smart application, causes the printer to hang as well.
Downloading the firmware update and then trying to apply it through a USB connection does not work as the install program comes back with "Up to date" and you are unable to select the printer (see below).
Also as mentioned the firmware on the product page is the same as what is installed which was released back in November 2022.
On the product support page there is notification saying "A critical firmware update is available for your HP printer. Download and install now" which just takes you to the software/firmware download page. The latest item in it to have been released is the "HP Easy Start Printer Setup Software" which was released in April 2023 surely HP are not asking for it to be installed by users that have already got their printer working correctly.
On searching through the boards, it sems as though a number of users all started to get the same error around the same time, beginning of May.
But thank you for your suggestion and help

Hi, I have had exactly the same problem as above and I also tried everything advised and what I can think of.
I started to wonder if it could be something to do with my BT Smart hub 2 router. I turned off the firewall and it didn’t help. As a last resort I took the printer to my sons house and tried it on his Virgin Wi-Fi. Hey Presto, it downloaded the software and problem gone (at least until the next update). I’m wondering if the BT router could be a common factor? My underlying problem of course still exists.

Thank you for the information. I do not have a BT router as we are slightly different to the rest of the country. But I did try to connect through my mobile phone connection, but the printer still downloaded the update to 100% and then said it still couldn't download the update etc etc.
But once again thank you for your insight

Just a thought, the only way to stop the printer going for an automatic update is to turn it off which means turning off the web services which means that you cannot use Instant Ink, why not just cancel the Instant Ink subscription and go back to buying inks away from HP.
Anybody got any thoughts about this way to move forward as HP seems to dragging their feet in a getting a solution for all of us who have this problem?
Let me know.

I have tried all of the guidance available to solve this software update failure and am
Still in the same position - if anyone or if HP tech team can provide a series of actions / resolution that has worked I’d be most grateful
