I have an Apple with the M1 chip. I am now being told with the next update from Apple my printer won't work as it will not support Intel apps!

Any suggestions as I'm not that tech savvy.

Thank you

@Gezza5,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Your printer itself may still work fine -the concern is usually older printer software or drivers that were written for Intel Macs.

Apple is gradually ending support for Intel-only apps on M1/M2/M3 Macs, but this is a phased process over the next couple of macOS versions, not something that normally breaks overnight with one update.

First, check whether your printer supports:

• Apple Silicon / M1-compatible drivers
• AirPrint (Apple's built-in printing system)

The easiest way to do this would be:

  1. Find the exact printer model number.
  2. Go to the manufacturer's support page.
  3. Search for your printer model.
  4. Check whether it mentions:
    • Apple Silicon support
    • M1/M2/M3 compatibility
    • AirPrint support

On your Mac, you can also go to:

Apple menu → System Settings → Printers & Scanners

Select the printer and see what it says for the driver/type.

If it says "AirPrint", that is usually a good sign because AirPrint works natively on Apple Silicon Macs and does not rely on older Intel-only software.

If it does, you may not need the old Intel software at all.

So, the easiest next step is to look up the exact printer model on the manufacturer's support page and download the latest Mac driver/software package.

Kind Regards,
