HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw
Linux

My Linux12 drivers are all up to date, but the Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M283cdw prints only in black & white even when I force the selection to print color. I am printing from LibreOffice Writer, which is also up to date on all drivers. What settings do I need to change to force the printer to print in color?

Hi @PGKen,

Welcome to HP Support Community!

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

Thank you for reaching out. Since you are using Linux with an HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw, HP's support for Linux printing is provided through the HP Linux Imaging and Printing (HPLIP) project. We recommend first verifying that the printer is installed using the latest HPLIP package available for your Linux distribution.

You can find the official Linux driver and support resources here: HP Linux Imaging and Printing | hp's Developer Portal

In the meantime, please check the following:

  1. Open the printer properties in your Linux printing settings.
  2. Verify that Color Mode is set to Color and not Grayscale or Black & White.
  3. When printing from LibreOffice Writer, select Properties or Printer Settings in the print dialog and confirm that color printing is enabled there as well.
  4. If available, try printing a color test page directly from the Linux printer settings to determine whether the issue is application-specific or affects all print jobs.
  5. Verify that all color toner cartridges are detected correctly and that the printer's control panel does not show any supply-related warnings.
  6. If the printer was added using a generic driver, remove and re-add the printer using the HPLIP driver package.

Please let us know:

  • Whether color copies made directly from the printer work correctly.
  • Whether the issue occurs only in LibreOffice or in all applications.

Thanks for being part of the HP Community!
