I have my printer on a usb cable, rather than wi-fi. No available wi-fi service. USB cable works but the glow lite is purple which has something to do with wi-fi operation. Does the printer think it's on wi-fi?

A purple glow likely means no connection, typically blue indicates a wifi connection is established.. Download the user guide from support.hp.com as it will explain what the various colors mean.
