On January 22, 2015 I purchased and installed an OfficeJet Pro 8615. Sometime in 2019 I decided to purchase an 8715, in the belief that the 8615 would die soon. Well, it didn’t. It kept going and going, churning out 37,000 black and white pages and 15,000 pages in color. I had to change the black cartridge every 4-6 months and the color cartridges every 8-10 months, so it was economical for me in that sense also. Finally, just last week, I got an error notice saying that the printhead was missing/failed and I decided to say goodbye to this old friend after almost 10 years of great service. So with the help of a computer friend we unpacked the 8715 after 5 years in storage. That’s when we found out that the cartridges that came with it had expired in 2020 and that the model itself has been discontinued. So I rushed out and purchased brand new 952 cartridges only to find, when we started installing, that it insisted that we use the setup cartridges. We did so, despite the warnings from other users that using expired cartridges could damage the printhead. Installing the Scan option proved to be troublesome for my computer buddy, with long wait times in between steps in the protocol. Eventually, we got everything to work and I can now print, copy and scan. So here are some questions: (1) Since the setup cartridges could damage the printhead (right?), should I toss them and use the newly purchased ones? (2) Since the 8715 has been discontinued, should I be thinking of getting a successor model? If so, what would be a good choice which would be up-to-date and would be installed with minimum fuss? I’ve heard that the 9135e might be a logical next step. Any advice? (3) In the meantime, is there a link to an online manual for the 8715, or is that now defunct? Thanks.

1. it depends on how long they expired, if it was 2-3 years you are fine, 5+ years expired would not be recommended to use.
2. No, 8715 is a good printer model, if you will not have problems with ink it will serve you a long time.
