I have a HP Laser Jet MFP M234dw Printer that was connected to an old computer, which is defunct; had to get a new computer and have been trying to download HP Smart and set up the new computer to the printer. When I went to do so, HP said my warranty had expired. Does this mean no more technical support? How can I get the new computer set up to print with my existing printer? Also, what is the difference between HP's offerings of 1 year Telephone for Technical Support Only priced at $29.99 and their HP Smart Friend Service plan priced at $74.99 for 6 months? It is not clear what the differences are.

Hi @CAISTRANO

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

You can absolutely continue using your HP LaserJet MFP M234dw with your new computer, even though the warranty has expired. The warranty status only affects service coverage—it does not prevent you from installing or using the printer.

Here are the steps to get your printer connected to your new Windows computer:

Step 1: Prepare the Printer

  • Make sure the printer is powered on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network you want your computer to use.
  • If the printer is not yet connected to Wi-Fi, use the printer’s control panel to select the wireless setup option and connect it.

Step 2: Install the HP App

  • On your new computer, download and install the HP App from the Microsoft Store.
  • Once installed, open the HP App.

Step 3: Add the Printer

  • In the HP App, select the option to add a new printer.
  • The app will search for available printers on the network. Select your HP LaserJet MFP M234dw from the list.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

Step 4: Verify Printing

  • Once the setup is complete, try printing a test page from your computer to confirm the connection.
  • If the printer does not appear, ensure your computer and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network, then retry adding the printer.

Step 5: Optional USB Setup

  • If you prefer or if Wi-Fi setup is not working, connect the printer to your computer using a USB cable.
  • Windows will automatically detect the printer and install the necessary drivers.

This process will allow you to use your printer with your new computer without any issues.
