Welcome to the HP Community --

Well, I don't know "why".

Some of what you can understand about your new printer can be found after you know the Printer Model --

Open

 Product Home - Printers

Enter the device type and model name of your HP product

Next,

The basic parts of the printer are illustrated in the printer's user manual.

Open Category Setup & User Guides

Find and open the user guide for your printer.

Take a look at the contents of the first chapter.

Next,

Look for and read the chapter about "Ink cartridges" --

and

Look in Setup & User Guides for additional "how-to" references, guides, documents, videos...

Next,

---------------------------------

"Not so smart"

The printer must get past the initial mechanical setup and self checks.

What?

Any application you use to set up the printer cannot connect the printer or set up the environment unless the printer is physically ready for the application to continue.

Ink cartridge and Jam errors are typically mechanical in nature.

Paper Jams are frequently mechanical, that is, there is an obstruction in the printer, perhaps in the rollers or elsewhere along the paper path.

A Paper Jam might also be the result of a sensor glitch.

Although rare on a first round "just out of box" setup, sure -- it's possible that the problem is due to a sensor error.

First checks

Is the printer clear of left over packing materials?

Perhaps get a flashlight (torch in the UK) -

Open the tray / front of the printer.

Get down level with the interior --

Shine the light inside the opening --

Look for bits of tape or cardboard or other odd bits of packing material.

If the top of the printer opens, do the same for that area --

Remember that while the front part of the printer might willingly open to allow you access to the print cartridges,

opening the top can be impossible (and even dangerous) unless the printer is switched OFF and unplugged.  If you are unsure, do not open the interior of the printer until you find and read the Troubleshooting documents .

When ready, open the printer --

Shine the light, peer around.

Next,

What about getting Help?

Back in your Printer's Product home,

Open Category Troubleshooting

Open Topic Printing

Open Subtopic Jams

Look for, read, follow the instructions in the document(s) about printer Jams

Beware of Fake Sites

Be very careful when out on the Internet looking for help - one little dot, space, or letter out of place can land you in trouble.

The official HP 123 site is where you can find the appropriate (and free) software and drivers for your printer.

There are many “fake” sites listed (in search engines) for “123” – please make sure you are using the actual “HP” site.

If you are asked for money to correct "issues" on your printer or computer OR if the “help” wants to sell you software, threatens you, or wants access to your computer, you are using a “fake” site. Do not give these people your information!
