Wake up 2700 from sleep mode

Let me ask again. Hopefully an answer can be provided:

HOW TO WAKE UP THE HP DESKJET 2700 FROM SLEEP? OR TO DISABLE SLEEP MODE ALTOGETHER. ONCE THE PRINTER GOES TO SLEEP IT SEEMS THERE IS NO OTHER OPTION THAN TO PHYSICALLY TURN IT OFF AND ON AGAIN. THIS IS A MAJOR DESIGN FLAW. QUITE FRANKLY, UNLESS ADDRESSED IT IS A SEVERE ENOUGH FEATURE THAT SHOULD DISCOURAGE ANYONE FROM PURCHASING THIS PRINTER. WILL HP ACKNOWLEDGE IT AS AN ISSUE AND PROVIDE A FIX??

A new firmware release, dated March 2024 is available but I did not see any reference to fixing a problem with sleep but possibly that might have been fixed.

If you cannot disable sleep and it is critically important then try assigning a fixed IP address to the printer.  Possibly the modem is not sending a wakeup packet as it does not know the IP address of the printer.  Alternately, the printer does not have an ip address and has to ask for one when it wakes up.

Wake up the printer and get a network report.   Make a note of the IP address.

Log into the modem and go the the DHCP setup and look for that IP address.  Change the allocation to fixed.

Make sure you have that IP address (or the printer's hostname) in your printer's property.  

If this is difficult then  ensure that your PC uses the hostname of the printer and not the IP address

The printer needs to be online and you need to obtain the hostname. You can do this from the printer by asking for a network or status report. If the hostname is not listed then there should be an IP4 address. If the IP4 address is 192.168.1.120 then you can obtain the hostname using the windows administrator command prompt and entering the following command.

nslookup 192.168.1.120

The hostname NPI40CB07.attlocal.net can be used to access the printer even if the IP address of the printer changes.


You can use the control panel to set the location of the printer

The modem always know the hostname and can send a wakeup packet to the printer.

the firmware update provided does not seem to find the printer. perhaps it requires USB connection? 
on the printer's native embedded web server, if i go to Tools->Printer Updates->Firmware Updates and "Check Now" for updates, I see that "The printer is up to date". the firmware used is version "TCP1FN2349DR", build date "2023-12-07".

what i have done at the moment, is that i have changed wireless network IPv4 settings from DHCP to "Manual IP" with IP 192.168.36.9 (although the same IP was previously configured as fixed for the printer as well from the router, so I'm not sure this will change anything. 
i also set up a script in a local server to ping the printer over http:

hopefully that will prevent the printer from going to sleep.. let's see.

You have the latest software

HP shows a March 2024 date but archive is all dated 2023

Probably changed the date to get more users to download it.  I suspect the software ensures that only HP ink cartridges are used.

Thanks for the idea of pinging the device.  I may look into that as I have a Canon photo printer that also sleeps like the 2700.  I think it has to do with WiFi powering down as my HP LJ sleeps but it is hardwired ethernet and wakes up instantly.

Something else to look into is the KeepAlive messages between a router and a device.  I am no expert on networking and am guessing that something in the router may need to be enabled to keep the connection active.  It could also be the  firewall or NAT closing down when it sees no activity.

so i don't know which part worked - whether setting the fixed IP or the regular http ping - but in any case, this seems to have solved the problem and the printer does not seem to go into the "unwakable" deep sleep anymore
