Can anybody tell me what features are necessary and what can be turned off?
WiFi Direct: Enabled
Require IPP Authentication: Disabled
SNMPv1/v2 read-write access: Enabled
The new printer was working for 1 hour before I decided to take a look at the advanced settings ... Reading online it everywhere says to disable unused services. I had no idea what I was doing and I disabled a bunch of the network features / protocol below and I ended up with a printer that was no longer being able to print, no longer being discoverable, no longer being able to configure the settings, no longer being able to connect to USB ... etc.. basically one big brick. No way to reset the printer.I was going to throw to junk. All my machines are macs and I have iOS devices. USB printing worked. But no wireless and no access to configure the printer. Fortunately, I had a spare Windows machine, and finally was able to access the configuration via USB and enable all those services below.
First of all, why does't HP provide a way to reset the printer to factory settings using the software tools. There is the Doctor application and it is not useful in trouble shooting the issue I described.
Anyhow, here are the settings... they are all enabled. Why do I need them all?
My network:
1. Router and printer attached to my Wifi
2. Mac computers, print directly from computer, I never use computer to print from another device
3. One PC just used to fix broken thinks as I was doing now
4. I have iPad and iPhone and need AirPrint
5. Android devices and need wifi print
6. I do NOT print from outside of home (so no printing via internet)
7. I need to be able to access configuration scree (this one I am not sure if I should keep or not..). Is it safe to allow access to printer confirguration over wifi? I don't want to disable something again and I end up unable access the printer settings.

Hi @itoldusoandso,
I'd like to help!
- If your printer is connected to a router all the network settings are required to access it over the network.
- Bonjour is an automatic network discovery service for Printers. Bonjour is a default network protocol that comes out of the box with most printers. You would need to enable bonjour to connect to your mac
- AirPrint to print from ios and mac, for AirPrint to work you would need your printer to be connected to a network.
- To print from android you can use the HP Smart app or HP Print service plugin but both devices must be on the same network.
- You are printing over the internet when the devices are connected to a network.
- If it is your home network then I would say it say safe to allow the printer.
Hope this answers your questions.

Thank you for replying.
1. Correct
2. Yes
3. Yes
4. My Android is printing over Wifi, the printer shows up as available printer on the Android device. I didn't need to install the HP Smart App or the HP Print Service plugin. Maybe it is device dependent?
5. This one I need to clarify. I do not use any of HP software. In fact, the printer was available on Mac to print through Airprint right away without any driver, same on iOS and on Android it prints through Wifi also without any support apps. I do not use any HP apps, in fact none of them are installed. I am wondering is the printing over internet feature still required.
6. If you say so..
Thanks.

I am referring to the print from anywhere feature.
As long as this printer is inaccessible behind the firewall then it's fine. There is talk about disabling ports on HP printers online so I got the impression there are ports.

Print Anywhere is available with select printers. Open the HP Smart app to see if your printer is supported and to set up the service.
- If Print Anywhere or Enable Print Anywhere is listed under Options or Settings, your printer is supported. Continue to the next step.
- If a Print Anywhere option is not listed, your printer is not supported.
NOTE: Print Anywhere is automatically enabled on all HP+ printers or any other HP printer with print plans.
There is no option to disable the feature.
You may refer to the document for more information-Print Anywhere with the HP Smart App
Hope this helps!

Yes so this seems a potential target for a security breach, if you can't disable that feature. I don't know if it's supported or not because as I said I don't have the HP software installed. The printer is best turned offline when not in use. I don't want to sound like a tin head, it's anyways better for electricity but I doubt there is much I can expect from a consumer grade appliance. Thanks anyways.

The feature is supported if you have installed HP Smart if you are not using any of HP Drivers or Apps to enable and use its feature.
I am sure it will not affect or use extra space or power.
I understand about your printer turning the printer off when not using it.
I think you are good with all the features you are currently using the printer for.
Hope this answers some of the questions.
Stay safe and take care!
