Since HP has started uploading a copy of every scan I make, is that violating the HIPA rules when scanning medical records?

Where did you get the information that there is a copy of your scanned document uploaded somewhere else?

@Nobodyyeah,

Not to be an apologist for HP, but there is absolutely no evidence that HP is automatically "uploading every scan" you make.

With HP printers (including when using the HP Smart app), scans are normally saved to a destination you choose (local PC, email, or cloud service). Data is only sent to the cloud if you explicitly use features like "Scan to cloud", email, or similar sharing options.

From a HIPAA standpoint, a violation would require unauthorized transmission or storage of protected health information. Simply using an HP scanner does not constitute a HIPAA violation by itself —the risk depends on how you choose to send/store the scanned files.

If you're handling medical records, best practice is to:

  • Save scans locally or to a compliant system
  • Avoid cloud/share features unless you know they meet your organization’s requirements

In short, the concern is understandable, but the assumption that HP is uploading all scans by default is not accurate.

Kind Regards,
