Spoiler
Unfortunately, the firmware update did not fix the issue.  I must also add that it is frustrating to be forced into having to use the app in order to access features of the printer.

I consistently have problems using HP Smart.  I reload the app, try to sign in repeatedly, change my password, and the "Thanks for your patience" using Windows 10, a Chromebook, and my Android device.  It seems I spend an hour fixing every few months, try again, and end up in the same state again.  Not sure what is going on.

Same issue on HP DeskJet 2130 with thinkpad T580.

Failed to get it fixed via removal and re-install HP smart app. 😞

The printer is becoming useless. I don't understand why the app has to authenticate to server, to scan documents..
and the APP gets stuck in `Thanks for your patience`

I also faced the same issue on my Mac OS, using HP 3835 All in-one printer. Two solutions came out after some thought...

Solution-1:  Installed HP Smart on my Android phone and that was able to show the Sign In dialog, where I could sign in and start using the Scan functionality.

That kind of stuck me that probably on my Mac, it was endlessly stuck waiting for me to sign in somewhere. Then I realized, it probably opened a small window of my browser to help sign in. Then the Solution-2 popped up.

Solution-2:  Right click on the browser icon to see if there are any windows open (In my case Chrome browser). Yes there was a browser window open which essentially had the login dialog. So then signed in and viola, the things started up 🙂

If you see Solution-2 is not working for you, then remove the printer from HP Smart and add it back. That might open up the browser window for sign-in. Remember the sign-in does not open in the active browser window.

The sign-in URL shows up as something like https://login3.id.hp.com/

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Venkat
