Hi @Latoyam25,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand you’re setting up your HP Smart Tank Plus 651 on a Chromebook and it’s asking for a PPD file. Let’s go through a few steps to clarify this and get you printing.

Understand what a PPD is on Chromebook
Chromebooks do not use traditional PPD files like Windows or macOS.
ChromeOS relies on built-in drivers (IPP / driverless printing), so a manual PPD is usually not required.

Make sure the printer is connected to the same network
Confirm the printer is powered on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the Chromebook.
Chromebooks can only discover printers that are on the same network.

Add the printer the recommended Chromebook way
On the Chromebook, go to Settings > Advanced > Printing > Printers.
Click “Add printer” and wait for the Smart Tank Plus 651 to appear automatically.

Select the correct driver option (important)
If ChromeOS asks for a driver or PPD, choose:
– Manufacturer: HP
– Model: Select “HP Smart Tank Plus 651” or “Generic IPP Everywhere” if the exact model is not listed.
Do not choose “Provide PPD file” unless there is no other option.

Avoid manual PPD upload
HP does not provide PPD files for ChromeOS for this model.
If ChromeOS forces a PPD upload, it usually means the printer was added using the wrong method.

Use the ChromeOS “IPP Everywhere” driver
When prompted, select “IPP Everywhere” or “Generic driverless” as the driver.
This is the correct and supported method for HP printers on Chromebooks.

Restart and try again if the option persists
Restart both the printer and the Chromebook.
Then repeat the add-printer steps to refresh printer discovery.

I hope this helps.
