Why is HP Smart so dumb.  I need it to trigger my scanning function and it says it cannot connect with my printer.  Now my Tablet can and print, my phone can an print, I can print in all my applications on three different computers.  In other words, the WiFi connection is there but for whatever reason, HP software cannot find its own printer/scanner and copier.  Windows can find it.  IOS can find it.  HP Smart cannot.  So I uninstalled it and reinstalled it.  I downloaded the software to install my printer again.  Even though it found the printer it gives me a network cannot be found error.  That makes no sense.  It found my IP address, found the printer but then cannot connect with the same printer online.  So as a scanner, my printer is a brick.  I can print but God forbid I wanted to use one of the tools in HP smart.  Photos with the Smart Card reader? A brick.  So basically two of the three functions I purchased the printer for I cannot use.  Now I can connect with a USB cable and use that way, so I know the functions work but Smart is a dummy when it comes to finding my HP printer online.  Thankfully this must have been a software update glitch because it did do the original install wireless.  Help on this issue from HP is nonexistant so I am hoping a user ran into this and there is some fix I did not try.  Owe and the troubleshooter the install software sent me too did the same failed process the download software tried.  What is it the say about repeating the same failed process and expecting a different result?

@RufusE, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I understand you are not able to scan using the HP Smart app. It seems like a bug in the app. We will have to wait until HP releases a fix in the next update.

Until then, kindly use the Hp Scan and Capture app to scan.

Alternatively, you may use the HP Scan Extended app to scan and check if that helps.

Once it's downloaded and installed, go to Start > All Programs > HP > HP Scan Extended > Run "HP Scan Extended"

You can Download-Save-Install > HP Scan Extended

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

If HP programs refuse to recognize that my printer is indeed online as every other program finds it to use with print function, why in the world would I want to aggravate myself further with more HP software.  HP Smart identifies the printer but says it is offline.  HP install fails to find the printer at all.  HP Printer and Scanner Doctor finds the printer, says it is offline (again, if it was offline why can I print from it over WiFi?  Doctor correctly identifies that WiFi and the password, which I had previously entered into the printer, when I first installed it on WiFi.  Doctor then asks for the IP address that is shown on the printer.  I go to the printer and write down the IP address but no, Doctor says that is wrong.  So I follow the instructions that tell me to print the wireless info.  I do.  Same IP address.  I enter again.  Nope, Doctor says that doesn’t go with the printer.  I try my Router IP address and the one in my laptop.  Nope, not those either. And now you want me to use some other programs? Okay, I will try, but this seems like a foolish endeavor to me.

Surprise, surprise.  Another HP program unable to find the online printer.  Maybe a suggestion about how to help HP programs find an HP online printer?
