I  have been using my printer for over 1 year, and all o the sudden the printer is telling me it can't connect to my internet  because the printer can only connect to a 2.4 GHz Wi fi network and that my computer is a 5GHz . I have not change internet so I don't understand why is saying this now. I bought a cable to connect directly from computer but it doesn't seem to read it. what can I do?

Hi @jo580,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating this can be, especially when everything worked fine for a year, and suddenly, connectivity becomes an issue. Let’s break this down and get you printing again.

Why This Happens

Most HP printers, including yours, only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi because it offers better range and stability for IoT devices. If your router recently changed settings (for example, merged SSIDs or switched to 5 GHz priority), the printer may no longer see the network.

Steps to Fix It

1. Check Your Router Settings

  • Log in to your router’s admin page.
  • Ensure the 2.4 GHz band is enabled.
  • If your router uses a single SSID for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, temporarily split them into separate names (e.g., Home_2.4 and Home_5).
  • Connect the printer to the 2.4 GHz network.

2. Use HP App

3. Wired Connection (USB)

If you bought a USB cable and the printer doesn’t respond:

  • Make sure you installed the full feature driver for your printer from HP Drivers.
  • After installing, restart your computer and printer, then reconnect the cable.

4. Alternative Option

If your router cannot split bands, you can:

  • Enable the Guest Network on 2.4 GHz and connect the printer there.
  • Or use an inexpensive Wi-Fi extender that broadcasts 2.4 GHz only.

Why It Suddenly Changed

  • Router firmware updates often enable “band steering,” pushing devices to 5 GHz.
  • ISP upgrades can replace your router or change its configuration without notice.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
