I can't connect my printer to the wifi (as the uni wifi doesn't allow it) so I've tried to connect to the printer through the wifi direct. I've successfully paired with the printer from my mac but cannot add the printer to it. Its not coming up as a defual printer (because its not connected to the wifi) and when I try to add the printer through the IP address, I don't have the right software to register it

Hi @Matt47,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

I appreciate you taking the time to share your concern and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are having issues setting up Wi-Fi direct.

I’d love to help!

Wi-Fi Direct provides a direct wireless connection to your HP printer that allows you to print without joining a local network or connecting to the Internet. When you activate Wi-Fi Direct on your printer, you can securely print documents or photos from most Wi-Fi-capable computers and mobile devices. The technology is similar to Bluetooth, but uses Wi-Fi to work at greater distances and faster speeds.

Please follow below steps to setup Wi-Fi direct on your Mac computer.

Set up your printer using a Wi-Fi Direct connection with a computer running OS X.

  1. Turn on Wi-Fi Direct on the printer.
    • For printers with a control panel, touch the Wi-Fi Direct icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/933/c04342427.gif to display the Wi-Fi Direct name and password.
    • For printers without a control panel, press the Information button https://support.hp.com/doc-images/110/c04617287.gif to print a report that includes the Wi-Fi Direct name and password.
    • If the printer does not have an Information button, press and hold the Resume button https://support.hp.com/doc-images/745/c04599395.gif for 2 seconds to print a report that includes the Wi-Fi Direct name and password.
  2. On the computer or laptop, click the wireless icon https://support.hp.com/doc-images/720/c03897060.gif or https://support.hp.com/doc-images/884/c03901288.gif, select DIRECT-xx-HP [your printer model name] from the list of available networks.

NOTE:

If the printer name does not display, you might be out of range of the Wi-Fi Direct signal. Move your computer and printer closer together.

  1. Enter the Wi-Fi Direct password.
  2. On the computer, click System Preferences, and then click Printers and Scanners.
  3. menu, DevicesIn the click https://support.hp.com/doc-images/168/c02625402.gif below the list of devices to add a device.
  4. Click your printer name, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the connection and driver installation.

Let me know how it works and you have a good day ahead.

It is the last step that is the problem. So I am connected to the printer but when I go to add the printer in system preferences -> Printers and Scanners -> Add Printers, my printer (HP ENVY 4520 Series) doesn't come up in the default printers

Hello, @Matt47

I see that you were interacting with @The_Fossette. He is out of office and I'd like to help 🙂

Going through your post, I understand that you are trying to print from your MAC via Wi-Fi direct. Mac computers with OS X do not support Wi-Fi Direct, but you can still print to a Wi-Fi Direct printer.

Go to http://hp.care/2pp7a6C and follow the steps listed under "How do I print from a computer that does not support Wi-Fi Direct?".

Let me know if that helps!

Good luck 🙂

Hi,

I'm having the same problem.  I upgraded to Win 10 and I see the printer listed as a wifi connection but when I connect it says "No internet, secured"  Used to work fine when I was running Win 7.
