I have a new HP 35LDesktop GT16-0285t and a HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e . In Windows update it can't do the update. Is it because this is an update for a printer that is directly connected to the computer via a USB cord, because it's on a network via Ethernet.  Thank You Bob

Hi @Bikerbob69,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Windows Update often lists optional printer driver updates for devices detected on your system. These updates can apply whether the printer is connected via USB, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi; the connection type doesn’t usually block the update.

Why the Update Might Fail

  • If your HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e is on a network (Ethernet) and not directly USB-connected, Windows may not be able to apply a driver update because it expects a local connection.
  • HP App and HP drivers often manage network printers separately, so Windows Update isn’t always the best way to update them.
  • Sometimes the update fails because the printer is using HP Universal Print Driver or HP drivers, which are newer than the ones offered by Windows Update.

What You Should Do

  1. Ignore Windows Update for Printer Drivers
    • It’s optional and not critical if your printer works fine.

  2. Use the HP app or HP Support
  3. Check Firmware via HP App
    • Open HP app → Printer Settings → Advanced Settings → Firmware Update.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
