We are switching computers at work and we had our printer plugged into our old computer so I never set up the wireless option, and now I can't figure out how to set up the wireless option with our new apple computer. It only shows the printer as available when I select the printer's wifi, but then I am no longer connected to the actual internet, and then it still won't print.

Hi @emmalou99,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
- Let's start with some questions to better understand the situation.
Was the printer previously set up for wireless use, or was it only connected via USB to the old computer? - Do you have access to your Wi-Fi network credentials (network name and password)?
- When you connect the printer to its own Wi-Fi network, does it show any connection errors or prompts for setup on the printer display or your computer?
- Have you performed a factory reset or network reset on the printer before attempting the wireless setup?
- Have you installed the HP Smart app or the full printer software on your new Apple computer?
- Which version of macOS are you running on your new Apple computer?
Here are the steps to set up your HP LaserJet M209dw printer wirelessly with your new Apple computer:
Step 1: Prepare the Printer for Wireless Setup
Reset Network Settings on Printer:
- On the printer, press and hold the Wireless button for 20 seconds or until the Attention light blinks. This resets the printer's network settings.
Check Printer Status:
- Make sure the printer's wireless light is blinking, indicating it's in setup mode. If not, press the Wireless button to enable the Wi-Fi.
Step 2: Connect the Printer to Your Wi-Fi Network
Use the HP Smart App:
- Download and install the HP Smart app from the App Store on your Apple computer.
Add Printer to HP Smart:
- Open the HP Smart app and click on the “Add Printer” button.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the printer to your Wi-Fi network:
- When prompted, enter your Wi-Fi network name and password.
- Ensure your computer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network that you want your printer to use (not the printer’s direct Wi-Fi).
Allow Network Access:
- If asked, allow HP Smart to access your network settings to complete the connection.
Step 3: Verify Connection on Mac
Check Printer in System Preferences:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Ensure your HP LaserJet M209dw is listed as a printer under the correct network.
Set Printer as Default:
- Set the HP LaserJet M209dw as your default printer to make it the primary choice for all print jobs.
Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @emmalou99,
Please find the remaining steps below.
Step 4: Test the Printer
Print a Test Page:
- Print a test page from the HP Smart app or any application on your Mac to ensure the printer is correctly connected to the Wi-Fi and functioning.
Check for Software Updates:
- Make sure that your macOS and HP printer drivers are up-to-date. You can check for updates in System Preferences > Software Update.
Step 5: Troubleshooting Common Issues
Printer Not Found:
- If the printer is not detected by HP Smart or macOS, ensure that:
- Your Mac and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- There are no network issues or restrictions (e.g., guest networks, firewalls).
Reconnect if Needed:
- If the connection fails, try resetting the printer’s network settings again and repeat the setup steps.
Step 6: Additional Checks
AirPrint Setup:
- Your HP LaserJet M209dw supports AirPrint. Ensure AirPrint is enabled on your printer for seamless printing from Mac without needing additional drivers.
Restart Devices:
- Restart your printer, router, and Mac to clear any temporary connection issues.
If you continue experiencing issues or require further assistance I recommend you contact phone support.
Keep me posted for further assistance
