PROBLEM: Word and Adobe PDF give "unable to print message" when pointed at HP 7740
Windows 7 box with HP 7740.
Recently defragged with 1 Gig free on C: Drive
No issues until hard crash due to power outage and UPS Failure.
Ran CC cleaner and fixed registry issues.
Am able to see printer via "C:\Program Files\HP\HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 series\Bin\HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 series.exe and print diag pages and see ink levels and can ping to IP.
HP Scan and Print doctor will not load, have gotten new copy from web will not load or it does give a white window as if it is looking for a browser.
Deleted Printer from windows control panel/****/devices and printers and reinstalled printer driver from new download copy of HP drivers. Was able to print from via ***.7740.exe.
Cannot load HP Scan and Print Doctor from setup program
Running as admin.
Have done controlled shutdown, and reboot.
Disabled any autoload programs on boot.
Can get word, etc to print to pdf but not to 7740
7740 is default printer in control panel / devices and printers.
Any suggestions welcome

Hi @LLBrown,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you've already tried a number of steps to resolve the printing issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740. Given the details, here are some additional steps and checks you can perform to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the problem.
Check for Pending Print Jobs
- Clear the Print Queue:
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 and select See what's printing.
- Cancel all print jobs in the queue.
Reset the Printing System
- Reset the Printing System:
- Turn off your printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Leave it unplugged for a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on.
Reinstall the Printer Driver Completely
Uninstall the Printer Driver:
- Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Find the HP printer software and uninstall it completely.
- After uninstalling, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers and remove the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 if it still appears there.
Remove Printer Files from Registry:
- Open the Registry Editor (press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter).
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HP and delete any folders related to the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740.
- Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\HP and delete any folders related to the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740.
Delete Printer Files from Disk:
- Go to C:\Program Files\HP and delete any folders related to the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740.
- Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\HP and delete any folders related to the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 if present.

Configure Printer Settings in Applications
- Check Printer Settings in Word and Adobe:
- Open Word and go to File > Options > Advanced > Print.
- Ensure that the correct printer is selected and that no special print settings are interfering.
- In Adobe Reader, go to Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced) and uncheck the box for Enable Protected Mode at startup. Restart Adobe Reader and try printing again.
Network and Port Configuration
Check Printer Port Configuration:
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 and select Printer properties.
- Go to the Ports tab and ensure the correct port is selected. If you’re using a network printer, the port should be something like IP_192.168.x.x.
Ping the Printer:
- Open Command Prompt and ping the printer's IP address to ensure it's reachable.
Additional Diagnostic Steps
Try Printing from Another Application:
- Test printing from a different application to see if the issue is specific to Word and Adobe or if it affects all applications.
Disable Firewall/Antivirus Temporarily:
- Temporarily disable any firewall or antivirus software to see if they are interfering with the print job.
If after all these steps the issue persists, it might be worth trying a clean installation of Windows if possible, as the power outage could have caused more extensive system corruption.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
