I called HP tech support and the technician had me try all sorts of things that I had already tried and then finally admitted the problem was on their end and all I could do right now is disable firmware updates.  The "normal" way to do this is greyed out (probably because I am an instant ink customer) but there is another way to get to that setting.

Run the HP Smart application and choose "Printer Settings" which will take you to the embedded web GUI for the printer and then choose "SETTINGS" from the menu at the top.

On the left side click the + next to "Security" and choose "Administrator Settings"

Scroll all the way down to the bottom and uncheck both printer update boxes.

Thank you, Tom for posting this message. Great information! You saved me a call into HP. It's a bit obvious that it suddenly started failing to download for no apparent reason when network is working fine. So, he was able to provide you with the work around until it is fixed, if fixed. Does this mean that you can no longer participate in the HP Instant Ink program? Or, will they just keep charging you, even though your printer is unable to check in- with it's supply usage?
