HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I am trying to get my printer working. It worked fine yesterday but today it just keeps loading and says that it is printing but nothing is happening.

It does the same thing if I send the document through Wifi or through DIrect Wifi. It wont print the test page either and it won't copy a page either. It just says it is doing it and then keep loading. The printer is plugged directly into the wall. It is properly connected to wifi and so is my laptop.

I have turned off the laptop and the printer. I have checked on HP Smart app to see if there are any issues there, none. Ink is full. Paper is full.
Please let me know what else I can try. From what I can tell, my laptop didn't have any updates today.

-- Now HP Smarts app says that maintenance is in progress but it wont say anything else about what that means, and the printer isn't making any sounds or doing anything. just stuck on a loading screen--

There was a firmware release Feb 6, 2025

Possibly it did not finish installing or it needs to be installed

Attach printer with USB cable and download and run the firmware upgrade.

Usually, when a firmware upgrade fails, the device becomes unusable.

So I went through the process like you said. The first 2 times, the firmware update failed. But I turned it on and off again. The third time the update was successful.
I sent another document to it to print. So far, looks like it is still stuck on the loading screen. The printer recognizes that it is supposed to be printing. But it just doesn't do it.

Can you print reports by using the front panel?

Is this a walkup printer where you can insert a USB with a PDF file and print the PDF?

Maybe a problem with the PC or the router if going through the router.

If reports print fine and you can print a PDF from a USB flash  then the problem is the transmission of the data

I can't really say why it happened, but somehow it got over that error code. Maybe one of the times I turned it on and off. Now It just said that one of the inks were empty, and I changed it to a new one. However the new ink was third party, and the printer is refusing to print with a third party one.

My printer is quite old, so I am not concerned about using non-HP for the warranty purposes. And I know in the past, you could still print with non- HP and it would warn you against it but you could click past that and still print. It looks like they changed that now I am stuck and it won't print.

Yea, the new firmware started checking for HP ink

Reminder: Dynamic security enabled printer. This Firmware includes dynamic security measures, which are used to block cartridges using a non-HP chip or modified or non-HP electronic circuitry. The printer is intended to work only with new or reused cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip or circuitry.

The below type is unlikely to work.

Some HP printers can use non-HP ink

Just to be clear, you are saying there is no work around. I can't undo the firmware update. So now my choices are to either buy HP ink or buy another printer

Note that this is a user to user forum and I am just the messenger of this bad news:  HP inkjet printers, like many other OEMs,  check to see if their ink is being used.

I have HP cm1415 LJ and it takes any of the really cheap toners.  On the other hand my Canon photo only accepts Canon cartridges

these LaserJets should eventually accept any type of toners

Apologies, I think that came across not how I intended. I was truly trying to understand what you were saying.

I appreciate the help, I am just trying to assess what my options are.
