Since I use & love QuickBooks Pro -- older version which I paid once for and if I upgrade I will be paying multiple times since licensing has changed ... I pretty much cannot upgrade my OS from Windows For Workgroups (7 @ 64 bit). Now I'm challenged with getting the new "smart" HP printer installed (HP Office Jet Pro 8136e). The printer is recognized when I select "add printer" but then "next" takes me to a screen where I have to select a printer and this particular one is NOT listed. I had no problem installed on antoher laptop with an upgraded OS to Windows 9, I believe -- but that one will not print from a website nor will it print Adobe files -- those documents to into the queue and then generate an error.
How can I get a copy of the driver to install this printer? And, what modifications do I need to make to get web pages and Adobe to print? Thanks so very much for assistance!

Hi @menkens,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8136e printer and your older Windows 7 system:
Step 1: Download and Install the Driver for Windows 7
HP does not officially support newer "smart" printers like the HP OfficeJet Pro 8136e on outdated operating systems like Windows 7. However, there are options:
Download HP Universal Print Driver:
HP provides a universal driver that works with a wide range of printers, including newer models.
- Go to HP's Universal Print Driver page.
- Select Windows 7 (64-bit) as your operating system.
- Download the latest Universal Print Driver (PCL6 recommended).
Try Basic Drivers:
If the universal driver doesn’t work, you might be able to use a "basic driver" for a similar printer model. Search the HP Drivers page for "OfficeJet Pro 8130" or "8136e" and choose Windows 7 if listed.
Manual Add Printer: If the printer is not automatically detected during installation:
- In Devices and Printers, click Add Printer.
- Choose Add a local printer.
- Select Use an existing port (like USB or TCP/IP).
- Select Have Disk and point to the driver files you downloaded.
Step 2: Fix Web Pages and Adobe Printing Issues on Windows 9 Laptop
Printing problems from websites or Adobe often indicate configuration issues or missing plugins.
Update Adobe Reader:
- Make sure Adobe Acrobat Reader is updated to the latest version compatible with your system.
- In Adobe Reader, go to Edit > Preferences > Security (Enhanced) and disable "Protected Mode at startup."
Web Printing:
- Use a different browser (e.g., Chrome or Firefox). Some browsers handle print jobs differently.
- Clear the print spooler:
- Open Services.msc (type in Start menu search).
- Locate Print Spooler, stop the service, clear the files in C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS, and restart the service.
Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Update the printer firmware via the HP Smart app or using the printer’s control panel. Firmware updates resolve many compatibility issues.
Step 3: Set Printer as Default
Ensure the correct printer is set as the default:
- Go to Devices and Printers.
- Right-click the HP OfficeJet Pro 8136e and select Set as Default Printer.
If you face any trouble downloading drivers or setting up, let me know, and I’ll guide you further!

I hope this helps.
