I am trying to set up my new hp office jet pro 8135e. I hit the alignment button and it's been "preparing" for about 30 minutes and seems stuck. It didn't print an alignment page.

I'm looking for guidance.

Thank you,

Donna

Hi @Donna477

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your new HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e is stuck on “Preparing” during alignment and did not print an alignment page. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Cancel the stuck alignment

On the printer control panel, press Cancel (X) once.

Wait about 30 seconds to see if the printer returns to the Home screen.

This safely stops a frozen alignment process.

Perform a power reset

Leave the printer turned on.

Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Wait 60 seconds, then reconnect the cord directly to a wall outlet and turn the printer back on.

This clears temporary firmware lockups during setup.

Check paper and tray setup

Remove all paper from the input tray.

Reload 10–15 sheets of plain white paper, aligned properly.

Make sure the paper guides are snug but not tight.

Alignment will not start if the printer does not detect paper correctly.

Verify cartridges are installed correctly

Open the cartridge access door.

Ensure all cartridges are fully seated and clicked into place.

Close the door completely and wait for the printer to finish initializing.

Start alignment again from the printer

From the printer control panel, go to Setup / Tools / Printer Maintenance.

Select Align Printhead or Align Cartridges.

Wait up to 5 minutes; alignment should begin printing shortly.

Preparing longer than a few minutes usually indicates a hang.

Try alignment from HP Smart

Open the HP Smart app on your computer or phone.

Select the printer, then go to Printer Maintenance.

Choose Align Printhead / Align Cartridges.

This can trigger alignment if the control panel process fails.

Check for setup completion

If the printer is still in initial setup mode, complete any remaining setup steps in HP Smart.

Alignment may not proceed until setup is fully completed.

I hope this helps.
