OfficeJet Pro 6970
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I cannot get an HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 printer to print thru redirection in wiondows remote desktop being run thru an L2TP VPN. Everything seems to work perfectly. I print on the remote computer. The job shows up in the "see whats printing" window on the remote computer. The job then shows up in the "see whats printing" window for that printer on the local computer. The job disappears from the remote computer as if the job printed. The job in the local "see whats printing" window just says Error - Printing. No explanation of the error.

The printer is an HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 multi function printer connected to a WiFi home network thru the HP network re-discovery port monitor port that installed when I installed the printer.

The operating systems are, local computer Windows 7 Home Premium remote computer windows 7 pro.

VPN connection provided by Cisco Systen VPN Client 5.0.07.0440. Server side is a Cisco ASA 5505 router firewall.

Remote desktop Client version 9.2.9200

Remote computer has the HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 Basic Device Software version 40.12.1161 installed and the printer is connected to port TS001.

The local printer has the full software package for the OfficeJet Pro 6970 installed. This compuer was used to do the original installation and setup of the OfficeJet Pro 6970 when first installed. This printer is connected to the HP network re-discovery port monitor port that installed when I installed the printer. It seems that port is named with the serial number of the printer.

My goal is to be able to work at home using windows remote desktop and print to my printer at home from software running on the remote computer at work.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Andy C.

Welcome to HP Forums,
This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips. Thank you for posting your query. I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

Because VPN software intercepts local network traffic and reroutes it to the remote network, users may experience some difficulty printing to devices on the local network. Printers on a local area network may become unavailable while connected to a VPN. To print locally, users may need to enable an “Enable Local LAN Access” setting in the VPN software.

Disconnect from Virtual Private Network (VPN) and install the printer driver.

Please contact your VPN administrator to:

Enable Network Lock (Internet kill switchand Allow access to local network devices such as network shares or printers.

Enable split tunneling.
