Hi @fireguy1,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating it is when a color printer only prints in black and white, especially when everything looks fine on screen. Let’s walk through a few steps to get your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw printing in color again.
Check Print Settings in Windows
Sometimes the color option gets disabled in the driver settings.
- Open the document you want to print.
- Go to File > Print > Printer Properties (or Preferences).
- Look for a setting under the Color tab or Paper/Quality tab.
- Make sure it’s set to Color, not Black & White or Grayscale.
- Click Apply > OK, then try printing.
Set the Printer as Default & Reinstall Driver
- Go to Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Printers & Scanners.
- Click your HP printer, then click Remove Device.
- Download and install the Full Feature Software and Driver from:
👉 HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support - The default Windows driver often lacks full color options — using HP’s official driver ensures everything works.
- Restart your PC after installation.
Test with HP Smart App
- Open the HP Smart app and try printing a test page or a color document.
- HP Smart usually forces the full-color driver settings to load correctly.
Still Not Printing in Color?
If it still won’t print in color after reinstalling:
- Try printing from a different app (like Word or a PDF viewer) to rule out app-specific issues.
- Print a supplies report from the printer’s control panel (Settings > Reports > Supplies Status). This confirms if color toner is being recognized.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
