HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer - N911a
Microsoft Windows 11

After working normally earlier today, suddenly after scanning in a document I am unable to save it to my computer.  When I press save, it opens up like I am searching to open a document instead of asking me which folder to save to.

Hi @ellen2294,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

That must be incredibly frustrating—expecting your scanned document to save easily and suddenly encountering this strange behavior can really disrupt your workflow. Let’s figure this out together.

  • Are you using the HP Smart app, HP Scan software, or the built-in Windows Scan tool to save the document?
  • Have there been any recent updates to your computer or printer software that might coincide with the issue?
  • Does this happen with all types of scans (e.g., PDF, JPEG) or just specific file formats?

Let's try these steps to resolve the issue:

Firmware Update: Click here

Try assigning a static IP address and a manual DNS address: (Only if your printer connected wirelessly)

* Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.

* Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.

* Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)

* Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.

* Click on radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)

Keep me posted for further assistance
