cannot use the scan button on HP Envy

Bought the HP Envy 6132e in a sale for nearly half its original price.
I can now see why they were trying to offload them, and am not surprised they are being discontinued.
They are indeed something else, and my old HP Deskjet 2549 beats it hands down for performance in every way!
Cannot get the scan button on it to work. Am then told to go to the hp.com/hpscan website.
I have tried reloading the software several times now, but when it comes to near the end, HP requires me to sign up to a contract regarding paper and ink usage before it finally instals.
I cannot just press the scan button on the lcd display as one should, but have to go through the scan application that is on my desktop.
Any ideas?
