My computer and printer are no longer connected.  I deleted the printer and then tried to add it back in, and I get the error message below.  It did show up on the list of printer options to add.  I have an HP Envy 5540 and a MacBook Pro with MacOS Monterey 12.7.6

An error occurred while trying to add the selected device.

Hi @Demiski,.

I understand your MacBook Pro is no longer connecting to your HP Envy 5540, and you’re getting an error when trying to add the printer back on macOS Monterey 12.7.6. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Restart all devices
Shut down the Mac, turn off the printer, and power off the Wi-Fi router for 1–2 minutes.
Turn the router on first, then the printer, and finally start the Mac.

Confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network
Check the Wi-Fi network name on the Mac and compare it with the printer’s network (from the printer display or network report).
Make sure neither device is connected to a guest or extender network.

Reset the macOS printing system
Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
Right-click in the printer list and select “Reset printing system,” then restart the Mac.

Remove old HP software
Open Applications and uninstall any existing HP printer or HP Smart software.
Restart the Mac to clear leftover printer components.

Add the printer again using AirPrint
Go back to Printers & Scanners and click the “+” button.
When the HP Envy 5540 appears, select it and ensure the driver shows “AirPrint” before adding.

Try adding the printer by IP address
Print a network configuration page from the printer to find its IP address.
Use the IP tab in Printers & Scanners, enter the IP address, and choose AirPrint as the protocol.

Check printer Wi-Fi status
Make sure the printer’s wireless light is solid and not blinking.
If needed, restore the printer’s network settings and reconnect it to Wi-Fi.

Temporarily disable VPN or firewall software
Turn off any VPN, security, or firewall apps on the Mac.
These can block printer discovery and cause add-printer errors.

I hope this helps.
