HP Laserjet 1022 usb printer
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

My new MAC Book Pro laptop with OS 11.3.1 does not recognise my HP Laserjet 1022 USB  Printer. I get a message back saying that the OS does not support this printer. I have downloaded and tried to use the HP Smart Driver software, but that does not work either. Is the new version of the MAC OS too new and HP have not yet developed the printer software version???

@PGB3, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand you are trying to install the printer on the Mac

Make sure the cable is directly connected between the Mac and the printer.

The use of a USB hub is not recommended. Also, make sure the cable is connected to a USB 2.0 port on your Mac.

Do you have an Anti-virus/firewall installed on the Mac? If yes, disable the same for time being.

To check, select the Go menu on the top of the screen and go to the Applications folder.

  • Check if the printer is getting recognized by your Mac:
  1. From the Apple menu, choose About This Mac.
  2. Click System Report.
  3. Under the Hardware heading on the left side of the System Information window, click USB.

USB 3 devices appear under USB 3.0 Bus, and USB 2 devices appear under USB 2.0 Bus. The printer should be under the USB 2.0 Bus

Click here to download the printer driver using the HP Easy Start app.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi.

Thanks so much for coming back to us.

The new MAC doesn't appear to have any USB 2.0 Buses/ports ... when we connect the printer and look where you suggest within the Go Menu, there is only USB 3.0 shown listed, and the printer is not seen. The cable from the printer has an old style USB type A rectangular connector, which we connect to one or other of the two USB 3 ports on the MAC Book via a convertor-interface lead.  Do we have a connectivity problem here?

I did manage to get the printer to respond (but not print) one time by downloading an incorrect driver. So there is some communication, but not correct handshake.

Do you have any other suggestions?  Thanks.

@PGB3

Yes, the newer Macs have USB 3.0 ports which are backward compatible with USB 2.0. If the printer is not detected by the Mac, it could be a communication issue.

Try different ports on the Mac, check for security software, do not use a USB hub, connect the USB cable directly between the devices.

If you have an alternate cable, check if that helps.

If the printer is detected by the Mac, you can download the driver using HP Easy Start as mentioned in the previous post.

Let me know how it goes.
