I cannot print as the printer is telling me to connect to update HP Instant Ink status, but when I press the "Connect", nothing happens.  On HPSmart, I have tried to connect in the Overview, but it keeps telling me it's unable to connect and to try later.  On HPSmart, it last synced on 17 December.  Help!

Hi @Lauren1001,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your printer is blocking printing and asking you to connect to update HP Instant Ink status, but the Connect option does nothing and HP Smart cannot sync. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this and get the printer back online.

Confirm the printer is connected to Wi-Fi
On the printer control panel, check the Wi-Fi icon.
If it is blinking or missing, the printer is not connected to the network.

Restart printer, router, and device
Turn off the printer and unplug it for 60 seconds.
Restart your Wi-Fi router, then power the printer back on once the network is stable.

Reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi using HP Smart
Open HP Smart on your phone or computer.
Go to Add Printer / Set Up a New Printer and follow the Wi-Fi setup prompts again, even if the printer appears listed.

Use Wi-Fi reset on the printer
Restore Wi-Fi setup mode so the printer can reconnect cleanly.
For most HP printers, press and hold Cancel (X) and Wireless (📶) together for 5 seconds until the blue light blinks.

Sign out and back into HP Smart
In HP Smart, sign out of your HP account.
Close the app completely, reopen it, and sign back in to force a fresh Instant Ink sync.

Check printer status in HP Smart
Once connected, go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings or Account / Instant Ink.
Confirm the printer shows as Online and the Instant Ink status updates.

Verify date and time on the printer
Incorrect date or time can block HP cloud services.
If available on your model, set the date and time to automatic or correct them manually.

Wait for cloud sync to complete
After reconnection, leave the printer powered on and idle for 10–15 minutes.
Instant Ink status updates happen through HP’s cloud and may not be immediate.

I hope this helps.
