Have a deskjet 2542 attached to my iMac running sonata. Printer was paused and could not get it to print. Switched printer and iMac off and on. Printer just printed the set up [page and pause again. Then, perhaps, foolishly I removed the printer which I now need to reinstall. Have tried to download new firmware and software without success. Am not very technical as you may have gathered!

Can you help me to reinstall the printer - it is attached by an ethernet cable.

Hi @ackee123,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Reinstalling your HP Deskjet 2542 printer on your iMac running macOS Sonoma via an Ethernet connection involves a few steps. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

Reinstalling the HP Deskjet 2542 Printer

1. Prepare Your Printer and Network

  1. Connect the Printer:
    • Ensure your printer is connected to your network via Ethernet cable and powered on.

2. Download and Install the Printer Software

Visit the HP Support Website:

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page.

Enter Your Printer Model:

  • Enter "Deskjet 2542" and select your operating system (macOS Sonoma).

Download the Software:

  • Download the latest full feature software and drivers for macOS Sonoma.

Install the Software:

  • Open the downloaded file (usually a .dmg file) to start the installation.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software package.
  • This installation will include the necessary drivers and HP Easy Start utility.

3. Add the Printer to macOS

Open System Preferences:

  • Click on the Apple menu and select System Preferences.

Printers & Scanners:

  • Click on Printers & Scanners.:
  • Click the Add (+) button to add your printer.
  • Select your HP Deskjet 2542 from the list of available printers.
  • If your printer does not appear, click IP and enter the printer's IP address manually.
  • Follow any additional on-screen prompts to complete the installation and setup.

4. Test Printing:

  • Once installed, print a test page to ensure the printer is working correctly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
