Hey guys. I've got a laser jet MFP M283cdw. Current fw is 20250219. I'm trying to disable dynamic security so that I can use a non-hp ink cartridge. I've read that I need to downgrade fw. Has anyone done this with success that can assist me?

Hi @hey_its_bob,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Dynamic security is a feature in HP printers designed to ensure that only genuine HP ink and toner cartridges work with your printer. While the idea might be to protect against counterfeit products, this can sometimes restrict the use of third-party cartridges.
Unfortunately, disabling dynamic security in HP printers is not officially supported or recommended by HP. HP does not provide methods to bypass or disable dynamic security features, and attempting to do so may violate the terms of service and warranty agreements.
- It's correct that older firmware versions may not have dynamic security enforcement. However, HP does not support or recommend downgrading firmware, and this action can lead to unforeseen problems or permanent damage to the printer.
- Attempting to downgrade firmware can also void your warranty and possibly disrupt printer functionality.
Use Genuine HP Products:
- HP encourages the use of genuine HP cartridges, which are designed to work seamlessly with your printer model and maintain high-quality prints.
Checking Third-Party Cartridge Compatibility:
- If you must use a third-party cartridge, ensure it is specifically compatible with your printer model. Some brands manufacture compatible cartridges designed to work within HP's security parameters.
I hope this helps.

Your firmware upgrade basically bricked our printer. It makes no sense to continue on with an hp product. You created a problem you refuse to fix and now you want us to throw more money at you to buy your overpriced ink cartridges. It seems as if you have streamlined the process of forcing people to by your products under the guise of security. I realize with a company the size of hp nothing will come of this. It's just disappointing that instead of assisting in some way(which I know this company could) it chooses to push for more sales.

@hey_its_bob, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you so much for posting your query! My colleague @Kuroi_Kenshi is currently out, but don't worry—I’ll be taking over and making sure we get this sorted for you.
I’m here to help, and together, we’ll work through this!
Totally understand the frustration here — having a working printer suddenly stop functioning after a firmware update can feel like a real betrayal, especially when it impacts your ability to use third-party or refilled cartridges.
Unfortunately, the firmware on HP printers cannot be downgraded once it’s been updated. However, some printer models do include an option to disable Dynamic Security, which is what may be preventing your current cartridges from being recognized.
Here’s what you can try:
Open the HP Smart app or access the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering your printer's IP address in a web browser (make sure the printer is connected to the network).
Look for an option related to Cartridge Protection or Dynamic Security.
If you find it, try turning off cartridge protection or disabling dynamic security.
This isn’t available on all models, but if your printer supports it, it might allow the use of your current cartridges again.
I know this doesn't fix everything, but I hope it gives you a step forward.
Note: HP doesn't recommend using third-party ink cartridges because they can cause problems with your printer. These cartridges may not work as well as the original HP ones, leading to poor print quality or even damage to your printer. The printer and the ink are designed to work together, so using third-party ink can cause long-term issues, like damaging the printhead or other parts. If cost is an issue, HP offers affordable options like the Instant Ink program, which helps you save money while still using HP-approved ink.

I truly hope these steps help get things back on track. If you have any questions or need any further clarification, just let me know – I’m happy to guide you through it and make sure everything works perfectly.
Take care, and I hope you have an amazing day ahead! 😊
Problem solved? 🎉 That’s fantastic! If you could mark this as the Accepted Solution, it would help others find their way here faster. And if you found this helpful, a simple ‘yes’ would mean a lot – it makes my day and gives this reply a little street cred! 🏅

@hey_its_bob, Hello!
@Garp_senchau is away for now, however, I'm @zoey7886 and I'll be happy to help you out!
Thanks for the update. Since both Cartridge Protection and Cartridge Policy are already off, one last thing you can try is restoring the printer to factory defaults. Sometimes this can help reset underlying settings that may be affecting cartridge compatibility.
If that doesn't work, I’d recommend visiting your nearest HP service center so a technician can take a closer look. You can find the closest one here: HP Service Center Locator
I know this has been frustrating, and I appreciate your patience. Let me know if you need help with the reset steps!
Best regards,
