do I need to remove paper to print envelopes.

and printer does not recognise DL and C6 envelopes as when altered on computer they come out blank.

Yes, you must remove any "other paper" before loading envelopes.

The printer has only the one intake tray.

Next,

The  DL and C6 envelope sizes are listed as supported.

Contributing factors include:

• Plain paper
• No scallops, exposed metal clips
• No foil lined
• White or cream color is best 
• Word > Mailing > Envelopes printing requires the full driver printer software to have been installed to gain access to the full range of Printing Preferences
• Printer Properties > Tab Advanced > Driver should be selected as the installed HP driver and NOT the Microsoft / IPP driver

A4; A5; B5; DL envelope; C6 envelope, A6, 10 x 15 cm

Load the paper / envelopes according to the instructions in the user guide:

Alert the printer the the loaded paper size / type.

You can set the correct media size and media type from the control panel.

1. Pull out the input tray.
2. Gently close the input tray.
3. On the control panel Home screen, touch Modify to make the desired changes.
4. Touch Done.

Click Apply to save changes

Alternate EWS format - Select newer InkJet printers and select LaserJet printers
