Received a new company laptop and installed the universal PCL 6 printer driver for the (edited) color printer.  The printer will not print documents in color but only B&W.  No setting to change on printer preferences.  Also no support with the scanner.  Printer is @ 17 years old and still a great printer.

@jabbao, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP PCL 6 printer.

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution. We hope our assistance has been helpful!

If your newly installed Universal PCL 6 driver is causing your printer to only print in black and white and you’re facing issues with scanning, here are some steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve these issues:

  1. Verify Printer Capabilities:

    • Confirm that the printer model you're using supports color printing. Some older models may have limitations in compatibility with certain drivers.
  2. Update Drivers:

    • Make sure you have installed the latest version of the Universal PCL 6 driver. Visit the HP Support website and search for your specific printer model to download and install the latest drivers.
  3. Check Printer Preferences:

    • Open "Devices and Printers" on your laptop.
    • Right-click on the printer and select "Printing Preferences."
    • Look for settings related to color printing. If you can't find any, the issue may be with the driver installation.
  4. Change Driver Settings:

    • Try different driver settings, such as installing another driver version (if available), like a specific driver for your printer model instead of a universal driver.
    • Sometimes switching from a PCL driver to a PostScript (PS) driver or vice versa can resolve printing issues.
  5. Update Firmware:

    • Check if there’s a firmware upgrade available for your printer model on the HP support website. Updating firmware can sometimes resolve compatibility issues.
  6. Check Printer’s Control Panel:

    • Inspect the printer’s control panel for any settings regarding color options and ensure they are not set to monochrome or black and white.
  7. Scan Functionality:

    • Ensure that the scanner feature is correctly set up. You might need a separate scanner driver if the printer supports scanning.
    • Verify with your IT department or consult the printer manual for specific scan setup procedures.

I hope this helps!

Take care and have an amazing day!
