Hi @Mavume

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing this—it’s understandably confusing when your printer shows a cryptic message like “RD” and stops working.

The “RD” error on your HP LaserJet M236sdw printer means “Encryption Credentials have expired.” This affects printing and scanning from macOS or iOS devices. You can fix it by updating the credentials through the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

You’ve already done the right thing by reaching out, and we’ll now walk through how to refresh the encryption credentials and restore full functionality.

Steps to Fix “RD” Error on HP LaserJet M236sdw

1. Find the Printer’s IP Address

  • On the printer’s control panel, press the Information button to print a Printer Status Report.
  • Look for the IP Address (e.g., 192.168.x.x) in the report.

2. Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  • Open Safari or any browser on your Mac.
  • Type the printer’s IP address into the address bar and press Enter.
  • This opens the printer’s Embedded Web Server interface.

3. Log In to the Admin Console

  • If prompted, enter the admin username and password.
  • If you haven’t set one, try leaving the fields blank or use “admin” as the username.

4. Reset Encryption Credentials

  • Go to Settings > Security > Encryption Credentials.
  • Click Reset Credentials or Generate New Certificate.
  • Save and apply the changes.

5. Restart the Printer

  • Power off the printer, wait 30 seconds, then power it back on.
  • Try printing or scanning again from your Mac or iPhone using the HP App or AirPrint.

6. Update Firmware (Optional but Recommended)

You’ve already done everything right by identifying the error—just a few more steps and your printer should be back to smooth, secure operation.
