I've looked through the community questions.  there are several with the same product, the photosmart D7160 but all of the solutions offered were for other models of printers, even when asked about this one specifically.  i need help getting around this.  Help!  thanks

Let me take a moment to thank you for posting on the HP Support Forums.

MKazi is at your service.

I understand that you have an HP Photosmart D7160 Printer and it displays an error code 0xc18a0001. I'll be glad to assist you with this case.

To provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Are you using the original HP ink cartridges or refilled ink?
  • Did any hardware changes take place on the printer (paper jam, ink cartridge replacement, etc.)?

While you respond to that, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
  • Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
  • Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
  • The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector.
  • Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.

Please attempt to clean the printhead by following the below steps:

  • Verify that there is plain paper in the main tray.

  • Press the 4-way arrow button to select Settings and then press OK.

  • Press  or  to select Tools and then press OK.

  • Press  or  to select Clean Printhead and then press OK.

NOTE: If the printer does not let you clean the printhead and stays on the error code then it indicates towards an issue with the printhead or the ink cartridges.

Try removing and inserting the ink cartridges one by one and check for which ink cartridge the error code appears. Maybe that once cartridge is the cause of this error and you can try replacing only that ink cartridge.

However, if the error persists after replacing the said ink cartridge then it is definitely the printhead that is defective and in such a case you may contact the HP phone support team to check the available service options: www.hp.com/contacthp

I sincerely hope this information helps. Feel free to let me know how it goes.

All the best! 🙂
