HP DeskJet 2720e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Due to some printer problems I got to update the firmware "TCP1FN23227DR (patch=0)" to the latest "TCP1FN23249DR" of my HP DeskJet 2720e printer.

I tried to do so with the separate downloadable firmware update package via USB connection, as well as WLAN connection. Both ways always fail - see the following screenshots:

status occupied

error at update process

Maybe it has to do with the status "occupied" (I have to translate the german word "Belegt") that is showing in the last "status"-row (i marked it in a red ellipse)?

The error message says (I have to translate) in the right status-row like "error at updating" and the message windows says like: "The update failed on 1 printer. Switch your printer off and on and retry to update." Doing so still fails the update.

What can I do to solve this? Thanks so much for any help in advance!

Hi customer people!

In case somebody has the same problem( "Status" row at firmware update says something like "occupied" instead of "ready"), here is the best and only solution:

1.) Because the printer is from the hardware side 100% ok including USB-cable (it prints a testpage, HP Print Doctor says all is okay), it has been obviously bricked by the firmware.

2.) You cannot reinstall any firmware, because a REAL factory reset (reinstalling old firmware) is not implemented. All you can do is some WLAN-resetting. But you can try this at least (use google to find 4 different methods for that).

3.) If printing via USB/WLAN (regardless of any other bad behaviour like printing no info-pages, rejecting your original password from the label of the printer, etc.) doesn´t work, do NOT waste time anymore!

4.) After disposal (and polluting your and my and the manufacturers world), your options are, depending on your individual needs: Buy a cheap used one of same type to reuse the cartridges,  buy something of more quality from (guess the manufacturer) for at least $200, or don´t buy anything at all - go to the copyshop for your few printouts that you have collected for some time. It may be worth thinking about a laserprinter (black only) too. For color prints there´s still the copyshop or a photo printing option in the next store.

Kindest regards, hold your head up!

Hi @Sprocky,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I see that you are facing an issue with updating the printer.

A) Please follow the steps below to perform a power drain.

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges

B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day

Dear Irwin6 - thanks for your reply. I am sorry, the images from my first post had been deleted due to personal information. I have cleaned those images now - please have a look:

image1-usb.jpgimage2-usb.jpgimage1-wlan.jpgimage2-wlan.jpg

As you can see, the firmware update fails both ways - via USB as well as WLAN connection. Performing a power drain did not change anything. What can I do now?

Dear Irwin6, thanks for your reply! Following your link to official HP Support sadly informs me, that factory warranty is expired. But I think my problem can easily be solved by performing a factory reset to the printer. This would restore the original firmware and put the printer in a safe operating condition. It is also the last thing I would try on the printer.

If this would fail the printer will have to be disposed, and a new printer purchased. So please could you kindly send me the instructions for performing a factory reset on the HP Deskjet 2720e as a last chance? Thanks so much for your efforts in advance!
