The amount of electricity required for the edge lighting is truly a very small amount.
The printer does go into "sleep" mode which allows the printer to maintain itself but uses the minimum of resources necessary to keep the printer "ready to use" when it's time to do so.

Unfortunately, it does appear that through all the testing and development of the product line, no one thought about people putting these printers in a location where the constant "lights on" feature would be a problem.
What?
Edge lighting (status light) does not have an "off" switch.
