@smeyer1, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The problem often stems from how Windows dynamically assigns default printers or how the printer is installed (e.g., via the HP Smart app vs. manual driver setup). Here’s a step-by-step fix to help ensure your printer remains set as default after every restart:

Steps to Fix Default Printer Issues

Disable “Let Windows manage my default printer”

Windows 11 automatically changes the default printer to the last used one unless this setting is disabled.

  • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  • Go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Scroll down and uncheck the box: Let Windows manage my default printer.

This ensures Windows won't override your preferred default.

Reinstall the Printer with Static IP (for network printers)

If your printer connects via Wi-Fi or Ethernet, it might get a new IP address after a reboot, causing connection loss.Step-by-step:

  1. Set Static IP for the printer:
    • Go to the printer’s control panel > Network settings > Advanced settings > IP settings.
    • Change from Automatic (DHCP) to Manual.
    • Note the current IP and set it manually (e.g., 192.168.1.123).
  2. Remove the existing printer from Windows:
    • Go to Settings > Printers & scanners.
    • Click on the printer > Remove.
  3. Re-add the printer manually using the IP address:
    • Go to Settings > Printers & scanners > Add a printer or scanner.
    • Wait a few seconds and click "The printer I want isn't listed."
    • Choose "Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname."
    • Hostname or IP: enter the static IP (e.g., 192.168.1.123).
    • Keep the default port and install the driver.
    • After adding, right-click > Set as default printer.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor (Optional Check)

  • Download & run HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  • It can auto-fix registry settings and detect any driver/connection inconsistencies.

Update Printer Drivers

Sometimes the HP Smart app installs a "web services" version of the printer that is more prone to disappearing. Make sure the full-feature driver is installed.

  • Go to the HP support site: HP Support.
  • Look up HP OfficeJet Pro 8035e.
  • Download and install the Full Feature Software and Drivers.

Final Tip: Prevent Windows From Deleting Inactive Devices

Sometimes Windows will auto-remove devices it thinks are inactive.

  1. Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter (note: only on Windows Pro/Education).
  2. Navigate to:
    • Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Device Installation.
  3. Find and enable:
    • Prevent device metadata retrieval.
    • Also, check Prevent Windows from removing devices that are not currently connected.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
