Hi @Mike1642

Welcome to the HP Support Community! Thanks for posting your query!

We're here to help you get back up and running.

I hear your frustration—it’s discouraging when a firmware update changes how the printer behaves, especially with cartridge recognition.

Before we walk through reinstalling the software from the original CD, I’d like to clarify a few details so we can isolate the situation and make sure the reinstall process works the way you expect:

  • When you say “clear out software,” do you mean removing the HP printer drivers and applications from your Windows 11 PC, or resetting the printer itself back to factory defaults?
  • Do you still have the original installation CD that came with the OfficeJet Pro 8710, or are you planning to use updated drivers from HP’s support site?
  • Is your main goal to get the printer working again with cartridges that are currently showing an error, or to simply reinstall the software so the printer behaves like it did when new?
  • Have you already tried uninstalling the printer from Windows Settings > Printers & scanners, or is this the first time you’re attempting a full reinstall?
  • Do you want the reinstall to include the HP App (which replaced HP Smart) for managing the printer, or just the basic driver package from the CD?

Once I know these points, I can guide you through the most effective path—whether that’s reinstalling the drivers on your PC, resetting the printer, or both. Would you like to start by clarifying whether your priority is fixing the cartridge error or simply reinstalling the printer software?

We're looking forward to helping you get back up and running!

Regards,
