I have a hp envy 6100e and just bought brand new hp cartridges from Target. The print keeps saying the cartridges are not installed. I have removed the plastic covering tape, I have installed and reinstalled them again. I have reset the printer.

Hi @pbrink99,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
The most common reason a brand-new, tape-free cartridge fails to register on an HP Envy 6100e is invisible oxidation or static residue on the gold metal chips, or a regional mismatch.
Since you have already reinstalled and reset the device, follow these steps to force the hardware to recognise the new ink:
1. Clean the Electrical Contacts:
Even minor skin oils or factory dust on the copper-colored strips can completely block the printer's sensors.
- Remove the cartridges and turn off the printer.
- Locate the small gold/copper-colored contacts on the back of the cartridge.
- Wipe them firmly using a dry, lint-free cloth (like an eyeglass wipe or coffee filter). Avoid using paper towels or tissues, which leave fibres.
- Clean the corresponding metal pins inside the printer slot.
- Note: Do not use rubbing alcohol or water unless dry wiping fails, and never touch the ink nozzles.
2. Isolate the Defective Cartridge:
Sometimes only one cartridge has a broken chip, but the printer throws a blanket "not installed" error.
- Remove both cartridges.
- Insert only the Black cartridge and close the door.
- Check the screen: if it changes to "Tri-color missing," your black cartridge is working.
- Swap them and test only the Tri-color cartridge. This identifies exactly which cartridge is broken.
3. Verify the Cartridge Number:
If you bought the cartridges off the shelf at Target, double-check that you picked up the exact model.
- The HP Envy 6100e series in North America requires HP 67 or HP 67XL cartridges.
- If you accidentally grabbed HP 61, 62, or 65, they will physically fit in the cartridge slot, but the electronic chip will be rejected entirely. Which cartridges work with my HP printer? | HP® Support.
4. Run the Digital Troubleshooter:
If the hardware is fine, the printer's internal memory might be locked in an error state.
- Connect your computer or phone to the printer.
- Open the HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site.
- Select your printer and click Diagnose & Fix (or run the built-in troubleshooter).
This pushes a digital command to clear hidden system blocks.
I hope this will help.
Take care and have a good day.
