HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer
macOS 26.0 Tahoe

Print jobs sent from iPhone 16 ProMax will automatically turn on the printer and perform the print job but print jobs sent from the Mac mini require me to manually turn on the printer or it won't print.  This problem has existed with several iterations of iPhones and their iOS's and several versions of the Mac mini OS's.

Hi @Bozko1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can understand how puzzling it must be when your HP LaserJet Pro P1102w printer wakes up and prints perfectly from your iPhone, but refuses to do the same from your Mac mini running macOS 26.0 Tahoe unless manually powered on. Let’s walk through what’s happening and how to fix it.

Why This Happens

Your iPhone uses AirPrint, which sends a wake signal to the printer over Wi-Fi. macOS, however, may be using a legacy driver or a different protocol that doesn’t trigger the printer to wake from Auto-Off or Sleep mode.

This issue has been reported across multiple macOS versions and HP printer models, including the P1102w. It’s not a hardware fault; it’s a driver and power management mismatch.

Recommended Fixes

1. Update Printer Firmware

Older firmware may not respond properly to wake signals from macOS.

  • Visit the HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer | HP® Support.
  • Select macOS 10.14 or earlier to reveal firmware updates (HP doesn’t list newer macOS versions officially).
  • Download and install the latest firmware using a Windows PC or an older Mac if needed.
  • Download and run HP Easy Start
  • Follow the prompts to install the printer and select AirPrint if available

3. Enable Wake-on-Print via macOS Settings

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners
  • Select your printer > Options & Supplies > Utility
  • Open HP Utility and check for Energy Settings
  • Increase the Auto-Off delay time or disable it entirely if needed.

4. Use AirPrint Instead of HP Driver

AirPrint is more reliable for wake-on-print:

  • Remove the printer from Printers & Scanners
  • Re-add it using the + button
  • Select the printer and choose AirPrint as the driver

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
